Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray

5.0

"And she knew he was being honest. There was such feat in the world. But love was everywhere if you looked. It was the best thing about humans. That they could stare into the abyss and still open up their hearts. A spit in the eye to fear."

Libba Bray continually blows me away with her writing, and this latest Diviners instalment is no exception. I am in awe of this story and how fucking relevant the issues of the 1920's still are today. Racism, homophobia, classism - despite the changes time has brought about, there are still so many issues that course through the veins of the world we live in. I adore these characters with all my heart. I couldn't pick a favourite (I just tried and literally typed out every Diviner's name) and their stories are all so complex and driven by the heart and I enjoyed every minute I spent in their world. I can't wait for the next book, and even if it takes five years, I'll be at the bookstore to buy it the day it comes out. I wish this series was more popular, because the writing is amazing, the characters are precious cinnamon rolls, the atmosphere is the perfect combination of creepy and intriguing, and I just love it so much.

On a final note, the author's note that comes at the end of this masterpiece has one of my favourite lines that I've read in a long time, and I'll end this review with Libba's words:

"This is a book about ghosts.
For we live in a haunted house."
