The Social Conquest of Earth by Edward O. Wilson

3.0

Okay, so I am admittedly new to the whole nonfiction realm. I've holed myself up with literature ever since I can remember, but I am expanding into the wonderful world of nonfiction with zeal. This book was overall good. Wilson made some awesome observations and I did learn a lot. The reason I gave it three stars is two-fold: First, it is heavy on the insect comparisons. Dr. Wilson is an expert on ants, so this is no surprise. But an entire section on insect sociality? No thank you. Second, it was heavily technical on biological and anthropological terminolgy, especially when talking about evolution. I had to look up some stuff to be able to understand what he meant, even though he emphasized over and over this was meant for lay readers. My brief foray as a biology major and my numerous anthro classes didn't quite prepare me, although much was familiar.
