3.5 stars — I will admit I was worried about how I was going to like this book. But in general there were still a lot of things that delighted me and made my heart happy. I think where it faltered were issues from the first book that weren’t solved in this book — mainly communication.

I was worried how I was going to feel about Wren rebelling and going off with this “bad crowd”, but the way it all played out actually worked for me. I mean, she was very much acting her age, and that was frustrating, but it was also reasonable. I appreciated that she was still the same flawed Wren — who could see her mistakes, but usually not before making them.

I loved that her relationships with her BFFs felt very repaired in this one — I needed that for her. It was nice to see her having Jess and Dar in her corner even if she couldn’t confide in them about the big stuff.

And Gabriel was pretty freaking sweet in general. I loved that he was this fairly gentle, sensitive hero. I loved the good parts of them being together.

My problems all stem from the lack of communication. The entire book would have been moot if SOMEONE would have just spoken up. And I didn’t always buy the excuses for why they refused to talk about shit. Like Wren’s Mom. I get it was a mistake, but OMG — you’re a GROWN UP!!! And Gabriel being all cryptic with his warnings was totally ridiculous — like why? The excuses given were flimsy in my opinion. Basically there was so much strife and grief that could have been avoided by just talking. And don’t even get me started on the things that still weren’t discussed by the end of the book.

Despite all that, I still enjoyed myself! I still felt a lot for lots of characters in this book. I do get that humans have a problem communicating in general, so it was believable — it just went on too long and from too many people.

So yeah. FINALLY finished this duology. And it went a lot better than I was expecting, b/c I know my tastes have changed! So yay!
