Kleypas is a consistent and lovely writer, and I binged nearly all of her historicals last year as audiobooks. I was delighted to find another new-to-me option through my library before a long car trip, but I tempered my expectations having read the first in the series, which was dated. This version underwent some revisions (presumably to remove offensive material), but I have no point of reference.

It was fine! Not the best in terms of the distinctive characterizations and story I've come to expect from this author, but overall enjoyable. Sophia started out strong with an interesting edge, but faded away as the relationship progressed. Ross was a solid hero. It just lacked a bit of depth and color.

That said, did I immediately check out the next book in the series? Yes. Yes, I did.
