Dead Beat by Jim Butcher

What can I say? I'm an easy mark. I know it. This book proves it.

As the story went along, I was thinking it was a pretty average entry into the series. Which isn't a bad thing. So far I think the series has averaged out to be good. We get to explore a new corner of the setting. We get some cameo appearances from characters that have played bigger roles in the previous novels. We get some advancement on a few of the plots that have been running in the background of the series over all story line.

And then we get to the climax, and it's the most amazing "we're going to take A and then add it to B" since that whole chocolate and peanut butter thing that everyone raves about.

And it's not just the combination of A and B. It's how it's done. With the focus of the plot, when A is introduced, your brain automatically jumps to what's going to happen. It's a Chekhov's gun. And then Butcher takes the time to explain the reasons why what your brain has decided must happen is very unlikely to occur. And then we reach the climax, where not only does it happen, but it has to happen if our heroes have any chance of saving the day.

I can only hope that when Mr. Butcher was writing the ending of this book, he was smiling and giggling about what was happening as much as I was when I read it.
