The setting was sweet and cozy in a small town founded by magical families but the story didn't quite fit the cozy vibe. It took me a while to get into it and then it took a serious turn about halfway through which totally threw me off. It does end on a hopeful note but there are some dark parts. It was also confusing and frustrating at many points. I felt like it was trying to be too many things at once. I did enjoy the way the author described the feelings of scenes; it gave a lot more depth and insight into the characters. I also enjoyed the semi-sentient house and its antics.
