The Ugly Cry by Danielle Henderson

challenging emotional reflective medium-paced

5.0

I've been trying to incorporate more memoirs into my reads, specifically of POC, and this one was incredible. It feels strange to call it a winner, as Henderson delves into her CSA and other trauma of being abandoned by her mother, child abuse, and neglect in favor of an abusive partner, but her writing is incredible and she paints such clear images. Her grandmother, a take-no-shit product of her time, is clearly a woman who did the best she could with the hands she was dealt, but loved Henderson in her way. I wanted the book to keep going, I wanted to hear more about grandma and grandpa and Sweetie Pie and how everything turned out for everyone. All those notes calling this heartbreaking and hilarious are dead on.
