The Brightest Night by Jennifer L. Armentrout

5.0

Holy alien babies everywhere! The Origin series is back to mess with your emotions and take you on an absolutely wild ride.

Luc and Evie are back, picking up right where we left off. Evie is a bit of a mess, not really knowing what’s going on with her life. Luc is a mess, having just found out that the most evil person to cross his life is back. Despite all of the turmoil surrounding Luc and Evie, their love story is still going strong. Luc is always there to catch Evie when she falls, no matter how hard that fall is.

The plot of the Origin series thickened at the end of the second novel, The Burning Shadow, when Luc, Evie, and crew ended up in Zone 3, which used to be Texas before the fall out of the Lux series. Now that the crew are deep into Zone 3, some of those familiar characters are back and I was definitely swooning over Daemon and Katy all over again.

Throughout the book, Evie learned how to embrace her powers and really comes into her own as a strong independent character, and we love that for her. She was truly the star and overcame so many unexpected struggles. Though these were definitely alien struggles and not something anyone would ever face, it was so relatable. Some times I just wanted to scream that life was just so unfair to Evie, but she just kept killing it, and who doesn’t love that?

While the plot focuses on Evie and Luc and not much else, there are so many characters swirling around them and in and out of their story, that it never felt lonely or centered. Life and living life was such a focus of this story.

It did feel a bit too real at moments, given that the virus in the story spread like a pandemic and cities were shutting down and quarantined. It was a definite instance of life and literature being too in line. As shocking as that was to see on page, it worked so well for the story and it didn’t feel weird or awkward. It almost made it easier to feel like you are one of the characters walking in and out of Luc and Evie’s everyday life.

One thing that JLA really kills at is twist endings. The end of this book didn’t feel like a cliffhanger, but it hurt to close the book. There are so many unfinished stories right now and it’s such a dark place for Luc and Evie. I absolutely cannot believe that I have to wait a whole year to hear what happens next.
