The Darkest King by Gena Showalter

5.0

This isn't perfect by any means, but it sure was fun.

I wasn't kidding when I said I soured on Keeley. Her ability to manipulate and control nearly everything is too much and ruins things. And I hated Gillian's book so much, I wish this one stopped referencing it. Let me take joy where I can, stop bringing it up, please.

It feels like this should be really epic, and somehow it's not quite. The ending is big, but it takes place so quickly, and some things are only resolved in the epilogue, so it feels kind of thrown away. And it's very nitpicky, but this book had a lot of weird errors. Using pack for unicorns, instead of herd or whatever? Fine, I'll deal. But there are so many editing errors -- wrong words, two verb tenses in the same place, as though someone was supposed to come back and make a decision, etc. Enough that my brain kept catching them instead of smoothing them over. Distracting and really unfortunate!

But man, Sunny was really fun, and a couple choosing to be honest and vulnerable with one another in order to form a connection? Wow, a concept. I would've liked more of them actually, after the climax, just the two of them. Some kind of emotional follow through. But this is kind of all I can ask for from these books.
