The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

2.0

[2.5]

for a horror and a thriller, it's not very good at thrilling and horroring. for a murder mystery, it fulfilled its purpose, though.

ugh. i'm disappointed. everybody was raving about this, and i knew there was going to be something really good happening later on, so i gave as much benefit of the doubt as possible reading this.

beforehand, i want to already say that the plot twist was well done, very much so. i did not see it coming, and i find it more than interesting the way
Spoilerthe timelines were different without our knowing, only to then piece everything together as soon as it was revealed that the couple he spied on were gabriel and alicia. i did not at all connect these two as it was happening
and i commend the author for pulling it off so well.

however, that's about it that's really good about he book, and also the only reason it's even close enough to 3 stars.

i thought that theo was cringe as fuck. the entire spiel of 'i want to fix her' just annoyed me, and i thought him obsessive as fuck.
Spoilerwell, finding out that he was the weirdo stalking her leads to a very clear look into his psyche

i was annoyed that he was so cowardly about confronting kathy, and i was annoyed that he stayed with her and kept pretending. i was annoyed that theo was blinded so hard by fake love.

alicia is a basket case. gabriel is an even bigger dick, jean-felix is a dick, christian is a dick, everybody is just annoying. i'm disappointed that the way everything was revealed
Spoilerwas by theo explaining his thoughts to us rather than living it out properly
. i'm disappointed that it didn't feel like the book was trying to scare me, but that it was just theo playing detective.

i don't know. am just disappointed.
