the hype around this book kinda made me set pretty high expectations, which it didn't manage to meet. that, and the title too—i was expecting some high fantasyish rival/enemies to lovers, but it turns out this book is more romance than fantasy (my bad for not checking it first)

i think this book is a good example of how tropes mean nothing when we're not familiar enough with the characters to care about their relationship. right from the start we're being introduced to iris and roman as these rivals at work, but as i read more, this rivalry feels pretty one-sided, iris's side. sure roman saw her as competition too but it doesn't seem to bother him as much as it did to iris, which probably would be more understandable if only we weren't being served his POV.
