The Broken Wings by Kahlil Gibran

4.0

this is such a beautiful novella. within a very limited amount of pages, khalil gebran manages to create a touching story about a couple of star-crossed lovers. he describes their story with beautiful, flowery language. i especially adored his metaphors. i also thought it was admirable how he managed to sneak in some very poignant political commentary.

in my opinion, what are currently considered “classics” is way too narrow-minded. almost all of those novels are either english or american, with some russian novels mixed in there every now and then. frankly, it’s an old way of defining literature that doesn’t work for the plethora of excellent novels from all around the world that we can nowadays access anywhere we want. even more so, it creates a warped representation of the world. what makes books so great, is that they provide you with new ways of looking at things and that they inform you on topics to which you were previously ignorant. therefore, i think it’s time we expand the definition of classics to incorporate more narratives from all around the world. and i think this book is an excellent place to start!
