REVIEW:

Ugh. Okay, I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but I didn't enjoy this one. I bought it for my Kindle years ago and didn't get around to it until now. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood, I don't know. But it was a complete drag for me to get through.

The setup is good. I enjoy bodyguard romances -- although I will admit I've been enjoying them less lately than I used to. But I liked the premise of this being a big strong man (Jake) protecting his ward (Cami). I liked the setup and I enjoyed their initial interactions.

But I didn't necessarily feel a natural transition from them disliking each other to being in love. Sure, I thought the transition from "hate" to friends was pretty well done. But from there it sort of leaped forward to love too quickly and I just didn't buy it. Especially from Jake, who seemed to go mental for Cami too quickly based on his playboy track record.

I also thought the "secrets" that he has are big, yes, but not so shameful that he shouldn't have shared them with her earlier on. It was dragged out in the story and we (as the reader) are expecting some big awful thing, when really it wasn't something that made him a bad person.

Now, as far as that secret goes, it jumps into a trope I very much dislike in romances -- secret babies/children. I really REALLY dislike this being used in romances and unfortunately I never find out about it until I'm already reading. So yeah, I didn't love that surprise.

Camille was an okay character. She's a pretty open book, which I liked about her. I liked that she's ambitious and down to earth despite her social status. I can't say that I disliked anything in particular about her. Maybe she was a little boring, but overall she was okay.

The suspense side of things wasn't very suspenseful in my opinion. It picked up during the last few pages, but before that, the plot side of things was very slow and dragged on. So not very gripping or exciting.

Overall it was kind of a boring story with bland characters and a mediocre romance. I was not a fan of this one.
