None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell

dark emotional sad medium-paced

1.5

The only reason I didn’t DNF “None of This is True” by Lisa Jewell was due to the excellent execution of its audiobook. As someone new to Jewell’s writing, unfortunately, this novel fell flat for me and didn’t ignite my interest in exploring more of her works.

For fans of true crime podcasts, the audiobook format of this story might still appeal, despite my personal reservations. The narrative style, though not my preference, could resonate within that genre.

The title aptly reflects the story’s ambiguity; even as it unfolds, clarity on what’s real remains elusive. Overall, I found the book lacking engagement; the characters, especially protagonist Alex, lacked depth and relatability. Her decisions often left me puzzled, as if she was coerced into actions she didn’t fully endorse.

Additionally, the handling of sensitive subjects like grooming and pedophilia was disappointing and detracted from my overall experience.

I’ve given it 1.5 stars (rounded up to two here on Goodreads) primarily for the exceptional audiobook production, which deserves recognition.

Content Warning: This book contains themes of pedophilia, adult/minor relationships, gaslighting, among others.
