Black Science, Vol. 2: Welcome, Nowhere by Rick Remender

3.0

While I enjoyed the painted art and the fact that this volume revealed the motivations and past experiences of several of the characters through internal dialog, I found the story arc collected in this volume to be overwhelming. I think that this was a combination of the painted art, very bright color palate (with a lot of jarring fuchsia), and the fact that the internal dialog was superimposed on top of action scenes. I'm all for counterpoint of words and images to get the most bang for your buck in comics and graphic novels, but everything together was a little bit too much for me, especially because I was already slightly confused because I couldn't quite recall what had happened in the issue or two preceding this collection. There was a ton of action, yet the story didn't seem to move forward at a satisfying clip. I'm looking forward to volume 3, though, since Grant is going to be back with the team.
