The Vertigo Years: Europe, 1900-1914 by Philipp Blom

5.0

One of the most engaging books on modern history I have read, this takes a look at the start of the 20th Century, a time of incredibly fast-paced change not only in terms of industrialisation, but also on the subsequent effects on society and humanity in general. The focus is mainly on Western Europe, though with regular visits to Russia, the US and the East as required.

Each year is introduced through the eyes of someone who had a major influence or documented the period, which proves to be an effective device to keep such a grand view on a human level. I particularly enjoyed the parallel threads keeping track of the sciences, art and literature, music and psychology alongside the politics and historic events.
