Not the best retelling of Hades and Persephone. It seemed like the story was trying to be deeper than the typical romance plot but never actually achieved depth. It came off like a really good but cheap mafia romance.

Hades’ backstory was okay to begin with, but didn’t give enough reason for his drive and hatred. The conclusion of it wasn’t that great either. Unfortunately, his character was the most built out of the cast. Persephone in this book is interesting with her ability to “turn on” her PR facade and her quips were pretty funny. For everyone else, you can tell the author is trying to “save” their backstories for the next book so they always feel like you’re missing something—because we are.

At best this is a typical flimsy romance story, with Greek gods as an almost fanfic-like fill-in. There are better retellings if you’re interested in Greek Mythology or fantasy.

The “A Touch of Darkness” series by Scarlett St Clair has more of the traditional background for Hades and Persephone. Fair warning, her Persephone is young, brash, and can be annoyingly immature because of her sheltered upbringing.
