Three generations of a Texas cattle ranch struggle for a future: grandfather, who owns and runs the ranch; his stepson Hud (for whom the movie was named), who doesn't care about the ranch and only wants the money; and his grandson, who is trying to help his grandfather save the cattle and the ranch. A stark story of the struggle reflecting the changing times of the post-World War II world.
