Monstress, Vol. 1: Awakening, by Marjorie Liu

3.0

This was definitely not for me, and I'm really sad because the art is STUNNING. But I cannot handle horror or this type of thriller, I just can't deal with it and it'll plague me so much that I won't be able to sleep. Let me talk about the three stars I gave for a second:

1 - for the female character. I KNEW I would adore her the moment I saw her on the cover, and I absolutely did. I think she's intriguing, multifaceted and so awesome. I have to confess that she was the one reason I read this fully. I don't think I would've suffered through the horror elements if not for her. I just wouldn't seek out things that are there to scare me, you know? It's not my jam. And that's okay!

2 - for the art style. WOW. That's all I have to say? Because I was goddamn terrified some pages that I had to flip the page really fast lol wow i'm a scaredy-cat

3 - for the story. I kinda wish this was a fantasy novel because I would LOVE to read about this, you know? But we wouldn't have gotten the amazing art. So it's give-or-take. this was the second reason I read the whole thing. Because I'm fascinated by the different societies and how they interact and how our main character fits into them and the cats! the cats are COOL. I like that we had little flashbacks but we never really got the full truth. That was cool.

Will I be reading more? No. I do NOT like scary things y'all the only thing I can take is like scary things with humor and this is eerie creepy scary and nOPE. the one horror thing i like is Until Dawn (the video game) and it still scares me most times yikes i don't even like that It movie everyone talks about like i just can't sdflgks i'm sorry that i won't get to see the beautiful art but i know others will enjoy it and i am glad for that
