The First Crusade: The Call from the East by Peter Frankopan

5.0

The thesis of this book subtly but significantly recasts the genesis of the First Crusade. It is convincingly and thrillingly defended. If you're looking for something new on a topic that has been well-covered by great historians, you will appreciate this book. It reads a little like a mystery novel, as Frankopan methodically reveals the truth of Alexios I Komnenos, and the critical role he played in shaping the First Crusade, and thus the history of Medieval Europe. I believe this is one of the most important and novel additions to modern Crusader scholarship.
