American Royals, by Katharine McGee

5.0

American Royals hooked me in right from the start. It was fun to imagine what life would be like if George Washington had become King instead of President and the resulting Washington monarchy we’d have today. The story centers around the heir to the American throne, Beatrice Washington, her siblings, twins Samantha and Jefferson, and a couple of friends or maybe frenemies. There is a definite Gossip Girls vibe with this group of characters. Drama, a love triangle, lies, paparazzi, forbidden love, a royal ball, and American Crown Jewels…this book has all the ingredients for an addictive read. My only complaint is that it left me wanting more. This story is not all wrapped up in a bow by the time you get to the end…you have to read American Royals II: Majesty for the continuation. I felt like the book ended with a major cliffhanger. My favorite characters are Nina & Samantha, but they really are all fun to read about.

“She had never been any good at disguising her feelings. There was something too immediate about her face, the way all her emotions played themselves out over her features like the shadows of clouds on water.”
