From Rockaway, by Jill Eisenstadt

2.0

I see that Eisenstadt in fact grew up in Rockaway, so I can't criticize her for being a geographic dilettante, like writers who say they're from the Bronx when in fact they're from Riverdale. Nonetheless, the novel doesn't feel genuine. More like a distant observation of the locals from the POV of Bard College. Maybe if I hadn't read The Clancys of Queens earlier in the year. Now that was the real thing.
