Never Never by Tarryn Fisher, Colleen Hoover

2.0

“How odd to be made of flesh, balanced on bone, and filled with a soul you’ve never met.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, here we are again with another negative review.
I'll start with the things I liked: the premise; very intriguing, Landon; he's a good brother, the setting; I love New Orleans and I live in Louisiana, the page count; it's 150 pages and a very quick read, the cover; it's very nice, the ending; the only reason I'll read the next book. I'm pretty sure that wraps the good things up!
So, this book was very disappointing. I had HIGH hopes for a book that is semi-written by Colleen Hoover; I LOVED Ugly Love and enjoyed Maybe Someday. I've never read a Tarryn Fisher novel, but I doubt I will after reading Never Never.
Let's dive into the things I disliked, shall we?
1) The Characters
Charlie is an annoying girl, to say the least; Silas has far more personality than Charlie. However, they both have the collective personality of a brick wall. I felt ZERO attachment to the characters. Charlie's personality goes to the extent of telling Silas, "Silas, I just saw my first penis!"
Wow, Charlie!! Do you want a medal?
Dumbass.
2) The Plot
It has a really nice premise, but it's not executed well.
3) The Setting
This book is set in New Orleans, and I absolutely adore New Orleans. However, both of them should have probably done some research on New Orleans.
- NEW ORLEANS DOESN'T HAVE MARDI GRAS ALL YEAR ROUND, YOU IDIOTS!!
-Have you ever heard of Marie Laveau? She's basically the queen of Voodoo, she got popularized on American Horror Story? Here's a picture of Angela Bassett, who plays Marie Laveau on AHS: Coven:
However, Marie Laveau isn't fictional. Fun fact: New Orleans has these two MASSIVE cemeteries, and you can go to Marie Laveau's tomb, write a wish, and if she grants it, you put an x on her tombstone. Here's a picture:
I say all of this to say, there's a certain scene with Charlie where she's talking about this lady in a room full of bones and bodies sitting on a throne made of glass, and I'm literally sitting there SCREAMING at the book that it's Marie Laveau. Because that scene is a part of New Orleans culture and legend, where Marie Laveau is sitting on a glass throne.
Fun Fact #2: Not related to the book, but you pronounce New Orleans like New-Or-Lens. Think of it as like a contact lens: New Or-lens. Thanks so much, glad to settle this!
4) The Writing
LOADS of grammatical errors, and the sentence structure felt awkward and cumbersome at times. I know I probably shouldn't be pointing out grammar errors, but I mean come on. God, it's like they weren't even trying with grammar.
The writing would change fonts, and it was starting to annoy me.
5) Miscellaneous
On page 40, They insulted Charli XCX.
SO OVERYHYPED
Review over. 2 Stars.
