The Secret History of the Lord of Musashi and Arrowroot: Two Novels by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki

4.0

I really enjoyed re-reading Secret History, and I appreciated a lot more about it now than I did when I was in the 12th grade. What was then mystifying and weird now seems utterly hilarious and well-written, and the pseudo-historical form Tanizaki uses is completely fascinating. I also enjoyed Arrowroot, which I read for the first time, for its exploration of form, narration, and the divide between fiction, myth, and history, though it didn't feel as fleshed out or nearly as fun.
