Rounding up from 3.5. There's a review below that captures exactly my thoughts... the writing skill demonstrated in this novel is top notch, and I'm certain there are layers my literal reading surely missed. The fact is that this is just bleak--the central character is a mess, much like her country, and I struggled to connect with her or her story--and I'm left feeling like I have more hope than this story projects.
