 Alexander raskolnikov is a penniless student living in Moscow forced to drop out of his studies because he didn't have any money. He decides to kill a pawnbroker who he has visited before. He almost gets away with it, but eventually

things come out and he must atone for his crimes

 A unique book, leaves you uneasy because its hard to fault the protagonist. Have I come out the other end feeling clean and pure? Maybe a little bit.
