Gruesome as all hell. Uncle Carl — as he’s supposedly called — did not pull any punches with this one. Unfortunately, not every punch landed. I was deeply invested in the LGBT and coming-of-age aspects of the story, and also the  inspiration (I assume) from Carrie and The Dead Zone, but all of this seemed one-dimensional in the end, mostly because of some writing decisions that took away from what could’ve been a nice balance of horrifying splatter-punk and a somewhat endearing tale of high schoolers facing hardships commonly found in adolescence. as well as those faced by those who love who they choose to love. overall, some pretty crazy, gory scenes and a fast-paced splatter-punk novel that’ll probably have you reaching for a trash-bin at one point or another.
