Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate

4.0

Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate--Powerful and vibrant, this book focuses on two women nearly a century apart in rural Oklahoma. The parallels in these stories are not all that subtle, but they work well. Wingate did her research and her experience in Oklahoma shines through. She references people and places in this state that someone with a surface level knowledge wouldn't get while crafting a really loving and hopeful story. Similar to a book like This Tender Land, this story references some clear atrocities that took place in Oklahoma, demonstrating how the ramifications pass from generation to generation. There are still people alive today who were directly impacted by gross mistreatment of Indians here in Indian territory after it was subsumed into the state. This book is a solid chronicle of our history while telling a darn good story. Thumbs up.
