Igniting Darkness by Robin LaFevers

5.0

This series completely captivated me from the moment I began it, and while I’m sad to see it come to a close, I have to admit that this is the right ending for it.

The story picks up right where it left off, and every loose plot thread is neatly tied up by the end. While the pace does move slower, the drama and political conspiracies are quite intense. I have to admit, at some points I felt bad for the king because with so many lies and half-truths, would have made my own head explode!

The characters remain as solid as ever. While it took me a while to warm to her in the beginning, Genevieve definitely earned her place in my heart. She fought to redeem herself and earn the love of her friends and those she’d fallen for. Still, no one will ever shine brighter than Sybella, who never backed down, never compromised when she didn’t have to, and whose ferocity always had me cheering for her.

The romances remain solid, and while I enjoyed Maraud and Genevieve’s sweet moments, nothing will ever surpass Sybella and Beast. They are an ultimate power couple, perfect foils for each other, and one of my favourites in YA fantasy.

Even though the action had been toned down, there were certainly some wild moments and battles and schemes. Though I have to say, the one plot involving a bear turned out to be one of the favourite things I’ve ever read.

All of this was accomplished through LaFever’s skillful and beautiful writing, and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next. Bingeing this series has been a delight, and while I will miss it, I am glad it reached the conclusion that left me feeling satisfied and whole.
