“No matter where you go, others will try to define you. Unless you define yourself.”

feeling utterly drained emotionally, jade war was a sequel that was even more complex in terms of its political, action-packed, and character development structure better than its predecessor. i truly don't know how fonda does it, having books spans years and has readers completely immersed into this modern yet influential ferocious world revolving around a singular substance with the entirety wanting to get their hands on it. mainly still following the kaul family and no peak clan in this installment was a lot of being on the edge of your seat anticipating what was to come but also fearing for their safety yet knowing due to the violent ways of kekon not everyone could be expected to stay alive forever and make it past this book at the least. one aspect of this series i thoroughly appreciate is the use of quite different multiple perspectives, no really set point of view every few chapters and getting to see every part of this world from clan people, to the regular jadeless in kekon to foreigners in espenia and how it all connects back to clan problems or people completely oblivious to how things work at the island. it was slow at times with the convoluted political conversations to keep up with but nevertheless wow with the multiple subplots my attention was still sustained. huge plot reveals and twists shocked me to my core, fonda did not have to throw my emotions back and forth like that i was just in physical pain. seeing hilo and shae grow into their roles, especially hilo having to become accustomed to the role of pillar along with literally seeing the kaul family grow in numbers in which the threats against them just keep adding up was continuously increased amazement with foreboding having readers thinking up the possibilities for the future of the world and power grab with jade. i can personally say i am very much unprepared for what jade legacy is going to bring with miss fonda lee having nothing but pain in store for her audience.

“The clan is my blood and the Pillar is its master,” she whispered. “I have a lot of regrets in life, but those oaths aren’t one of them.”
