Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

5.0

I haven't read something I enjoyed this thoroughly in quite some time. This is certainly a new favorite.

The writing style is wonderful and the story is imaginative and intriguing. The characters are mostly subtle in portrayal, but I felt that they were strongly developed. The story had a sort of airy detached feeling to it which gives the reader a lot of freedom. This book adds a whole new layer to London and I find myself smiling at all sorts of tube stops in London Above.

I loved the contrast between Richard's character and everything around him. He is so painfully normal and real. His character is one everyone already knows and is so easy to bring to mind. The rest of the story is so beyond the realm of this world. The characters, motives, everything. Having Richard as a guide through it all is a wonderful approach to the story and brings emotion and stability into a world so intangible and distant.

I am quite excited to read more of Neil Gaiman's work and am disappointed I've read my way off the edge of London Below with no sequel to hold onto.
