The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

4.0

*******SOME SPOILERS, MOSTLY MY RANTING*******
Ok, so this is my first review! Woohoo!
Anyway, I really enjoyed this book. The romance was great, Kayden was steamy. The story line was unlike most contemporary romance books, for it has to do with rape. I don't know if I'm just awesome, but I could tell who raped her pretty early on. Both Kayden and Callie came from catastrophic home lives, which forces them together one night at a party. Yaddayaddayadda, they don't talk to each other the rest of high school, when OH HEY! they wind up at the same college. She has trust issues and only confides in her gay best friend, Seth, Kayden is fascinated by Callie and wants to get to know her (you all know the drill.) For those who do not like steamy scenes (Who doesn't??), there are quite a few in this book. SETH WAS SERIOUSLY AMAZING. Sarcastic best friends add so much to the book. His hilarious lines often gave us a little breathing room from the somewhat depressing premise of the story.
On to the negative.
So, as much as I loovvvve Kayden and Callie, their relationship sometimes confused me. I get that the girl saved your life, but sometimes she is just SO AWKWARD. SO AWKWARD!!!!! Then, after her strangeness, she suddenly bursts into uncharacteristic actions. Like, she was talking to Kayden after a football game, then suddenly decides to burst out running into the rain and spin around. Yes, I get that it was on her and Seth's little "List of Things I Need To Do Today" or whatever, but come on. That was kind of painful to read. Also, the way Kayden handles the news of Callie's rape kind of got to me. When they were about to have sex, she said she couldn't then tried to run away (which happens ALL. THE. TIME,) she tells him. He's all like "Awh, I'm so sorry!" Then doesn't bring it up again. Then, when he finds out who did rape her, he didn't really react. Usually, this wouldn't be a big deal if he wasn't in the SAME ROOM AS THE GUY. Then, suddenly, he is filled with so much rage randomly later that night that he drives to a party and beats, excuse my french, the living shit out of him.
On a side note, I really despise her older brother. I LIVE for protective older brothers, and it really disappointed me that he was such a jerk to his little sister. I know it added to the story and there isn't really anything wrong with that, but for those who hear of an older brother and think YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like I did, be warned.
On another side note, Callie is kind of annoying to have as a main character. I kind of picture her like a baby dove with a broken wing. Helpless and fragile. I know she was raped and all, and I get that, but she was portrayed as EXCESSIVELY needy. She would practically run away like a deer in headlights whenever Kayden came around. I like having a strong heroine, like those in Jennifer Armentrout's books. I get that they are not the same, but, once again, personal preference.
*****THE ENDING CONTAINS A CLIFFHANGER THAT WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO BREAK YOUR KINDLE IN HALF. BE WARNED**************

5/12/14 EDIT*******
I'M LAUGHING SO HARD OVER THIS REVIEW OMG. REALLY, FOURTEEN YEAR OLD ME? " The story line was unlike most contemporary romance books, for it has to do with rape"???? I OBVIOUSLY READ A LOT OF CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE BOOKS... *SIGH*
ANYWAY, looking back on this two years later I realized that this book wasn't very unique, since EVERY BASIC ROMANCE BOOK HAS TO DO WITH RAPE: EITHER THE GIRL WAS RAPED, OR HAS A DRAMATIC SCENE WHERE SHE IS ALMOST RAPED BY A DRUNK GUY. OR A STALKER. OR IN THIS CASE, HER BROTHER'S BEST FRIEND. SPOILER! Ugh, I could punt my past self. All in all, this book is pretty basic and not very memorable, yet I still remembered it.... whatever, I would rate it 3 stars now due to my overabundant amount CR books I have read. But, if your new to CR books, you'll for sure like it! Then probably complain over it two years later like me.

ACTUAL RATING: 3 STARS
