The Merchant's Daughter by Melanie Dickerson

challenging dark sad slow-paced

2.0

This retelling was OK, but I didn't enjoy it much. The setting was too realistic in its prejudices and injustices and too unrealistic and fairytale-like in the characters and events that were crafted by the author to counteract the negative aspects. In other words, I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to imagine the author's happy ending in the setting she had created for it. So I left the book sad and dispirited.
