Moderate: Sexual assault
Minor: Transphobia
Tagged as minor transphobia because there’s only one instance and we are obviously meant to understand that the character expressing it is mistaken. Still, while I understand that Marian’s arc involves her accepting herself, the following quote was unnecessary and it wasn’t as though it was setting up a trans woman she would then meet later in the story. It was clearly an oversight given the inclusion of a trans-masc character and the acknowledgment; the author is probably not transphobic, but this passage occurs early in the book and it definitely put me on edge.
She’d heard of women who engaged in unseemly acts. Somehow, though, she couldn’t reconcile what she’d just witnessed with the horror in those whispered voices as the tellers related sordid tales of women with male parts preying on fair maidens. Neither Willa nor Alanna had any unusual bits of anatomy, as far as she’d seen, nor had they looked as if they’d needed any.
