Typist #4 - Every Romance is a Revenge Fantasy by Mimi Strong

2.0

This review was posted at Tsuki’s Book Blog on September 1, 2013. This was featured as a "Serial Sunday" post.

Sometimes when I read a series or a book and I can't believe I'm still reading it, I stumble across something that makes me consider it differently. This part did that for me. For some reason I was a little more on board with this serial than I was before. I'll go into why soon enough but I'll start with a summary.

The previous part ended with Tori running out on Smith when she heard he and his wife lost the baby because months before he wanted sex (whatever). He also threw a lamp against the wall. Tori went home and cried about it and realized she was madly in love with Smith (whatever). In the meantime Smith's backstory is revealed and he struggles with letting Tori go or pursuing her. A trip to Switzerland is where the big romantic finale occurs.

While this section was sort of 'blah' for the general storyline and the whole ridiculousness of it, it had its moments. I really enjoyed spending some time with Smith and getting his backstory. I enjoyed getting the full story on his ex-wife and everything that happened. It gave a little more understanding to his attitude and values. He had the potential of being a really fascinating character who, sadly, was underdeveloped.

I still found Tori to be ridiculously childish and immature. I hated how her entire support system totally supported Smith. No one seemed to think it was weird or creepy how this 41 year old man with violent tendencies wanted a 22 year old girl to be his typist/sex slave. See, there really was no relationship that was romantic in this book. Every scene was either mean conversation or sex. There was very little romancing or even getting to know each other since Smith was a stalker.

The thing about this was, my sudden ability to see the potential of the story. When Ms. Strong revealed Smith's backstory I suddenly thought this would have been such a better serial with a little less sex and a little more conversation. Tori and Smith were somewhat interesting characters but they often got downgraded to penis and vagina. They didn't have a chance to be anything other than sexual objects and that was irritating. The point was, I could sort of see a story in that final chapter that could have been interesting to see.

One thing that irked the crap out of me was Smith's rationale for having Tori sleep with her ex. He thought it would cure him of his obsession. Oh yeah, that's sexy. I want you so much so I'm going to have you sleep with your ex in front of me. Sure, whatever. The fact Tori went along with it made me dislike her so much I thought the relationship couldn't happen.

It was an okay serial for a quick read and I didn't hate it. I just had a lot of issues with it in general. I'm not sure if I would recommend it but for 99 cents (at the time), it was an okay experience. If you want to try her work or you're looking for an erotic serial, it might be worth the money.
