She convinces him that they are having adventures to keep his hopes up, and shelters him as best she can from those who wish them harm. Lizzy has to learn to allow people to take care of her and not do everything herself. Mr. Barton has to learn to be patient with Lizzy and how to open himself up again after being hurt before.
