This is SUCH a hard book to rate because it was quite dark and stressful ... but I was engaged enough in the story and the characters that I finished it. I keep seeing people talk about the 2nd and 3rd books being way better, and at the end of this one I definitely intend on continuing with the series. So I guess this book did its job? It's got a lot of triggery stuff, though, and some of the elements of this world are confusing but I am guessing they will be explained later.
