“Possibilities that lay in the past were illusions, closed doors, as meaningless as unfulfilled intentions.”

rereading jade city was just as stunning and immersive as my first read of this incomparable fantasy. from the in depth political talks to the familial disputes intrigue to the action-packed scenes that felt like you were genuinely watching it play out with the detail that went into it, everything was just so well balanced and fonda lee's writing was able to guide readers through details and a plot that has you on the edge of your seat. there's just something so captivating about family at each other's throats with affairs of the state and two clans that used to be part of a whole that are now grappling for power over their city and jade substance that sustains their physical might. multi-perspective was perfect with the distinctive characters and how they all provided different insight on their views on what they thought of the power balance in kekon. kaul siblings my best people with lan's goodhearted nature for peace as well as working as a mediator between his two younger siblings, hilo who's impulsive persona yet ability to empathize and understand people and shae with her composed, cutthroat self and dealings in political tactics. since birth, they were made and molded for the roles the three of them were to become but how they were brought up did not have roadblocks of another possible war in mind. their dynamic though with its pieces of grudges as a families do, their love language and putting each others' lives first will always prevail in order to keep the clan stable which i find interesting seeing that it can be surface level love and one can easily be ignored for months with a single wrong against the clan. ayt mada is another character i look forward to reading more about, with her backstory and capability of bloodshed without a single blink of her eyes, she really is a formidable opponent for the clan of no peak possibly even more impressive as i have yet to see how she plays out her next moves. this being said, questions are swirling around my mind with looking forward to reading jade war as soon as possible and on edge with how painful i've heard the sequel itself is.

“Screw you, Hilo,” she snapped. “I can kill my ex-boyfriends myself.”
