The King in the Golden Mask by Marcel Schwob

Schwob is such an incredible writer that even the stories I wasn't as fond of I found commendable. Incredible detail and imagery bring even the most abstract paragraph to life. Schwob's close attention to history gives his stories a certain weight, too.

Favorite stories: "The King in the Golden Mask," "The Embalming Women," "The Plague," "The Sabbat at Mofflaines," "The Salt Smugglers," "The Flute," "The Sleeping City," "The Cart," and "Bloody Blance."
