Pointlessly arbitrary - there's too many instances where there just isn't any meaningful clues offered so you have to make a choice that could make the difference between success and failure with no real way of logically inferring what the correct choice is. Almost impossible to win without extensive replaying and use of out-of-character knowledge obtained on previous playthroughs, which means it's rubbish storytelling.
