The narrator is generally unlikeable for the majority of the book.
However, the last line of the epilogue, where the madam of the bar reflects that she and his acquaintances remember him as a good and kind person, forces the reader to look back on him with some sympathy. The narrator sees himself as sub-human and a failure, and it's because of this (and his constant masking or "clowning") that his narrative of himself differs so greatly from others' perception.
