Las batallas en el desierto by José Emilio Pacheco

3.0

From what I understand, this book is famous for the topics it brings to the table, including racism, classism, sexism and others. But because this novela is super short, it doesn’t do much besides mentioning that those problems exist, which is fine, but whatever. The main theme I think is how national brands can’t compete with international ones so they go bankrupt or have to sell.

The main plot is about a little boy named Carlos that has a crush on his friend’s mom. The book tells us he is in love, but I don’t think so. I’ve always found the trope of “kid has a crush on an adult and actively pursues it” very awkward. It’s not that common but I don’t like it. Do I recommend it? Listen, if I was able to read it in a day so do you. It's probably free somewhere on the internet so check it out.
