When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole

4.0

Wow. This book does an amazing job of educating on gentrification and redlining through a thriller type plot. I really loved Sydney's character. She's tough, but she's hurting. She's fighting, but she's tired. When she returns to the neighborhood she grew up in after a nasty split from her ex, all she wants is to feel the comforts of home. But she realizes quickly that things have changed and continue to change around her at a dizzying pace. As she starts to dig into some odd happenings, she gains a new friend Theo who ends up playing a much bigger role in her life than she originally imagined he would, and they tackle the sinister goings-on together. Like other reviewers, I found the ending to be a bit forced and rushed based on the slow burn that the first 2/3 of the book was. However, I read the whole thing in a day b/c could hardly put it down, so I obviously couldn't wait to see what happened next.
