Young Avengers, Vol. 1: Style>Substance by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie

4.0

I'm pretty new to Marvel comics, but this read was pretty good and fairly accessible to a newcomer like me (if you've seen the movies that is). With a fun cast of characters and a unique conflict, this volume was a nice read.

Art: Alot of Marvel comics tend to have a similar rougher and more realistic style, but this one had a style I was more fond of. I don't really know how to explain it. It's still realstic but not as defined or rough. It's more appealing to the eye. The characters look their age. Besides the style, I like the expressions alot. Especially Kid Loki. The action's good too.

Characters: Because this is the first volume and there is a fairly large cast I'll excuse the characters not being too fleshed out. The characters don't usually have too strong of personalities, but this is the first time I've seen them so it might just be ignornace. Marvel Boy and Loki are exceptions to this though. Characters like Wiccan and Hulkling make up for this by having conflicts and arcs. Which I think help strengthen the volume itself. Their characters are probably my favorite in the volume. Plus they have a nice relationship. However characters like Miss America and Hawkeye feel too much like non-characters. They do stuff, but in that way they just feel like plot devices. There are a few character moments sprinkled in, but not detailed or enough in general that I can say off the top of my head what their characters are like. Together though, they feel fairly like a team, they have strengths and weaknesses. So there's that.

Story: I'm overlook a couple of flaws because of the unique concept. It's not a simple superhero villain, but rather the team's parents. It also has some good arcs and stuff. It feels very much like a teen drama, with a good dose of superhero and emotion. The drama might be a little forced at times, but I do like the presentation so I will excuse it. I mentioned it's fairly accesible, but there are some things that I didn't understand. Usually those can be fixed, through context clues though.
I just think the comic's a really good superhero story.
