Dr. Wangari Maathai Plants a Forest by Rebel Girls

informative inspiring medium-paced

4.0

I hadn't heard of Dr. Wangari Maathai before reading this book after being sent it as an advanced read from Netgalley.

I discovered what an incredible woman she was, and how she became a person to admire both from her home country of Kenya and the world when it comes to her education and environmental fight. The book tells us of how a young Wangari Maathai managed to attend school and gain a scholarship which opened so many opportunities for her. I found as always, that the author's of the Rebel Girls series are respectful of what the person has endured. Maathai endured both racism and sexism not only in Kenya, but in America and whilst its spoken about it's done carefully given the age of children these are written for.

The artwork is stunning, and the writing wonderfully done and are complimentary of one another. This series, called The Chapter Books, is going to be a guaranteed success and I'd happily buy them for young children, regardless of their gender as education that is accessible such as these; is important for all.
