I found this book enjoyable and engaging, but I wasn't held in a death grip. Am I looking forward to the next book? Yes. Was the magic system interesting? Yes. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes. Will I re-read it? Probably not.

Spoilers:
The tension between the Talasyn and Alaic was well done. There is certainly a lot of the miscommunication trope in this book and it started to make me pull my hair out toward the end. JUST TALK TO ONE ANOTHER DAMMIT.  And damn what a slow burn toward final tidbits of communication at the end. The almost-not-quite-sex scene at the end was almost unneeded, but I thought it was tastful if a bit humorous. Tender little virgins ha!

For fans of Reylo, you'll be soo happy through the whole book. You can't miss the Reylo fanfic basis once you know it's there. Does it detract from the storyline? Not really. But it does make things a little predictable. And I can only imagine Talasyn and Alaric as Rey and Kylo.

I just wish the dragons had a bigger part. Because dragons! Maybe next book.Â
