We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
Did not finish book. Stopped at 44%.
DNF @44%.
- Writing was needlessly dense. Locations were difficult to imagine, transitions made the sequence of events difficult to figure out, and the overall world felt very confused.
- Nasir's brooding was laid on way too thick
- Zafira's people are suffering from constant snowfall and a lack of resources. Zafira dedicates herself to hunting food, yet they can splurge on a lavish wedding and an ice cream cafe is in regular business. There's also a magic barrier that's inching ever closer to swallowing the entire kingdom, and no one seems at all concerned about it except for Zafira.
- I didn't find the banter between Altair and Nasir at all endearing. A secret about Altair's deception comes out that should shatter Nasir, and they're back to exchanging snarky quips like they're grudging allies a few pages later.
- Nasir acknowledges his father is a complete monster who is responsible for just about every sorrow in his life, yet he wants his love and acceptance?
- Zafria has to disguise herself as the huntress as her culture would shun her if the truth came out. So, when she's sent off to find the MacGuffin, she asks the caliph to keep watch over and feed her family and friends. Then, she reveals her true identity as she's sailing off for the magic forest, when she still needs the caliph to take care of her family. Why put them at risk like that? Why not just wait until your back, victory in-hand?
Not the worst thing ever, but I just couldn't get into it.
