It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken: The Smart Girl's Break-Up Buddy by Greg Behrendt, Amiira Ruotola-Behrendt

3.0

I read this much like I read He's Just Not That Into You- I had heard some hype about the book and got curious. Having gone through a breakup several months ago, I figured this might be the best time to give it a go and maybe get something from it. And...I kind of did? This is framed as if friends are writing/talking directly to you- lots of saying how great you are and how much your ex is losing out on but also telling you to stop moping and find someone who will recognize how great you are. I did the audiobook version of this book so it was kind of nice to keep hearing how great I am and how much of a loser my ex is. However, I think at this point I'm mostly over the emotional strain of a breakup (which, yay) so I didn't really benefit too much from the advice. I could see how this would be good for a recent split (like, first few weeks after). There were some problematic moments in the book- like saying a girl who sleeps with her ex's friends is a slut- and some of the logic behind the advice falls into the "women are emotional, men have no feelings" stereotype. But aside from those bits, there was a lot of encouraging aspects to this book. Many of the themes are repeated often but this works as a way to kind of beat the message into your head ("You are great. He is missing out. Go live your best life.") So maybe this was a 2.5 star book for me, not sure, maybe my next breakup I can better rate the book.
