The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson

5.0

This book is everything—if you liked Stranger Things, you'll love this. Set in the '80s in Niagara Falls, Ontario, the book features kids who are the same age I was in that year, and the book even reads like a YA book that was written in the '80s, so I was going to fall in love with it immediately. Jake's uncle owns a tacky ghost shop in Niagara Falls and talks Jake's friends into joining a Saturday Night Ghost Club, where he takes them to haunted spots in Niagara Falls at precisely the moment where legend has the ghosts appearing, tells them the haunted story behind each site, and then the children's overactive imaginations take over. Interspersed with the stories in the 80s are the stories of Jake in the present day, now a neurosurgeon, describing how the human brain works, how it can convince the body of things that aren't happening, and where mental illness begins. And eventually these two strands come together. This book is beautifully and brilliantly told. Also the cover makes it look like an old scuffed-up library book. I LOVED IT.
