🌡️The plot: Our unnamed narrator arrives in England from Australia to take up a role as matron at an elite boarding school. She quickly becomes infatuated with the headmaster's wife, Mrs. S. Over the course of a restless heatwave, desire blooms into an electric affair that can't last the summer.

The setting in this debut was well-chosen: a perfectly manicured school campus sweltering under a heatwave that makes everyone want to shake loose from themselves a little bit, complete with a rose garden that verges on indecently lush and always needs to be cut back into place. It swarms with teenagers that speak in one insolent voice, identified only as The Girls. It's the perfect background for this story of people straining at the edges of their assigned roles: matron, wife, woman, girl.

The central relationship here is compelling and steamy (although of course I only got to the first really graphic sex scene when I was sandwiched between two strangers on a plane 🙄) but I also thought this was a great story about queer friendships and trying to work out who you are and what you want. The ending really surprised and gratified me and despite not totally blowing me away it was a great holiday read.

🌡️Read it if you're also reaching an age where teenagers are starting to seem like beings from another planet 🥴👵 and if you want a tense and sensual book exploring themes around queerness.

🚫 Avoid it if you want stuff to Happen in your novels or if you're not looking for graphic sex scenes or kind of sad love stories at the moment.
